Re: Good old Texas koláč, Reader feedback, Aug 23 - 28, Vol 10, No 32
Although I am a Slovak-American from Pennsylvania, I grew up in Nebraska, and have lived in Texas for the last 20 years. I know the surviving Czech communities in both states. If you travelled west from Omaha to, say, Wilbur, Nebraska, you would find a community with a longer Czech memory. They have an annual Czech festival that is worth the visit. In Texas, many small farming towns still have an active jednota, which is the dance-hall on weekends. Of course, the Czech kolaches are different than the Slovak ones, being more like rolls or large fruit pastries.
