They are afraid of what is different. They have anecdotal evidence of immigrants not assimilating. They don't like to see women with their heads covered, wearing floral-print patterned dresses.

They point to what they can easily see as being a problem. They don't like the idea of yet another different nation joining the group because difference is bad.

Furthermore, they don't like the idea of sharing the wealth with people they perceive to be lazy and not worthy of economic benefits.

Turkey might be the strain that would force them to make major reforms. If the EU doesn't expand, it will be a slower, more painful process toward reform.
