One day I hope that the Hungarian parties will realise that implementing language and self-determination rights brings benefits greater than costs. Look at Wales. Twenty years ago it was a hugely depressed area. Its industry was dying and there was a risk of the population abandoning the country. Now Wales has a regional assembly and the Welsh language is everywhere. The country is vibrant and self-confident and makes a greater contribution to the UK than it would have if it had stayed a dependent backwater. There is a Welsh National Party (Plaid Cymru) but most of the changes have come from the ruling Labour Party, which took up the nationalist cause and seems to have got itself a nice stable base in Wales.
