Have you ever tried to get permission for temporary or permanent residence in Slovakia? It makes the American system look as friendly and streamlined as ordering a Happy Meal.
Most irritating is the business with the medical tests. You have to bring a doctor's note from your home country but even though they require it, Slovakia doesn't trust it and demands that you undergo a Slovak inspection at one of a few centres in Slovakia.
They also demand that you prove ownership of huge amounts of cash before granting anything in the way of permission.
And don't get me started on how I nearly didn't get a trade licence to teach English because I couldn't PROVE that I'd lived eight years in Britain...
Bureaucratic silliness is far from one-sided.
