The "núkanie" (offering) is the most unpleasant ancient custom which still thrives in Slovakia ("Never again, and other vain promises" by Jessica Rosen, August 19 - 25,2002, Volume 8, Number 31).
You see, 500 years ago it was polite to refuse drink or food on the first offer. You were supposed to be "shy" and only at subsequent "núkanie" you were supposed to accept it.
I had a verbal confrontation with my host for the same reason. My host just could not beleive that there are Slovaks who actually do not drink slivovica. I know how Jon felt. I wish this kind of "hospitality" would soon disappear.
