The US went to Iraq solely to secure control of Iraqi oil assets to the US sphere of influence. To say they went there in the interests of democracy is nonsense.

At first they claimed they needed to go to war because they had irrefutable evidence of weapons of mass destruction held by Iraq.

To control the oil, it was imperative that the US took military action against Iraq and therefore ignored the United Nations' wishes to attempt to avoid war and its consequences.

The "democracy" bit was invented later because the original claims of the US for the necessity of war, the WMD, were shown to be false, and also because the US still needed to hide the real reason, the control of the Iraqi oil assets.
