Re: Life in the EU without tobacco?, Volume 11, Number 14, April 11 - April 17, 2005

Not every restaurant can afford to set up two isolated rooms [for smokers and non-smokers]. I think the best solution would be for a smoking policy to be one of the factors that a restaurant or pub declares when it applies to the town for a licence.

That way, the town could decide what proportion of smoking or non-smoking establishments it wants. There should be some way for the restaurant to clearly show its policy at its entrance. People could choose, and a lot of smoke-free bars already do good business.

But I also think that I, as the owner of a property, should be free to set the rules of conduct within it. It is more important that the EU not be able to control my behaviour than a slightly increased risk of me getting cancer or heart disease.
