Aren't we missing a sense of reality here? ["Police drink because of the great psychological pressure which is put on them." Pavol Zajac, police corps president, commenting on the 12 car accidents this year involving drunk officers in which six people have died and four been injured.]
Though we may argue how police crime should be handled in theory, what all these cases point to is the alarming situation in practice. Here I'm convinced that we should go by the stick and start right at the top.
The top police officials should immediately resign or be suspended.
The respective department officers should be held responsible.
The concerned individual should immediately be suspended and face criminal charges.
Conditional sentences should be given to responsible department officers at all levels on the very first occasion of a crime, followed by unconditional firing with no possibility of returning on any second occasion. By spreading responsibility throughout the organizational structure we can expect the police to take "great care" among themselves and punish any violation of law severely and immediately, not allowing low morale to escalate to cases of harm and death.
