Reader feedback: Slovakia loses heavily

The sad thing is that Slovakia does not benefit at all from the EU kitty. On the face of it, Slovakia nets €169 million per annum, but loses heavily if you subtract the cost of the decommissioning of the old nuclear power units. Austria, via the EU, made this a condition for supporting Slovakia's EU entry.

Slovakia had to throw away 11,000 tonnes of sugar without receiving any compensation, and had to cut CO2 emissions drastically, something that is not at all good for attracting FDI.

I reckon that the only satisfaction Slovakia can get out of EU membership for many years to come is that she can proudly call herself a member.

Countries that are aiding Slovakia financially in real terms are Norway and Switzerland, two countries that (wisely I must say) refuse to be part of the cast of this cabaret.
