Re: EU Constitution ratified, Volume 11, Number 19, May 16 - May 22, 2005

It is interesting to see that Slovakia believes that full autonomy on tax issues has been maintained.

The constitution does indeed guarantee that individual member states have the right to veto any tax legislation proposed by Brussels.

That looks good, but only as far as it goes.

There is no protection whatsoever against the EU adopting an assumed minimum tax income, based on the average in the EU, which it can then use to determine the level of subsidies or grants.

A "net receiving member" [of subsidies or grants] might then become a "net paying member", unless it increases its tax income.

On June 1, I am going to vote on this constitution in Holland and will vote 'no', and if the current polls are anything to go by, my vote will be one of the 58 percent to reject the constitution.
