I am surprised at the pessimistic attitude of some of the contributors. Surely, as this past election has proved, Slovakia is now ready to join fellow European countries in what looks to be a "European Superstate".
As for the Roma/Gypsy problem, it's not as bad as it's made out to be. It's been blown out of proportion by the media. Yes, there is an ongoing problem with the treatment of the Roma by the whites, but this has always been a problem in many eastern European countries and will not be eradicated in a matter of days or months. It's in the hands of young parents to educate their children that all people, no matter what skin colour or nationality, are equal.
In this way, the new generation of Slovaks as well as Czechs, Hungarians etc. can live peacefully, side by side with the Roma without the added stress of discrimination.
As for the Irish and their referendum, I don't think the Irish should deprive the Slovak Republic and other candidate countries of the chance of joining the EU simply because they're afraid of the much needed enlargement. Surely that's what's best for Europe's long-term future.
