Reader feedback: You are exploited

Re: Lenovo to employ 340 people at technical centre, Volume 12, Number 16, April 24 - April 30, 2006

I feel I have to support Nicole's response. It is important that Slovakia understands that these jobs being offered to the country are not clean new jobs, but jobs wrenched from another country. While your people will be offered new and exciting careers, it is important that they understand that these are offered only because they are willing to accept much lower salaries than are appropriate in the United Kingdom or the United States. These are jobs which have been performed in Greenock for the past 55 years, yet because the business has been sold to the Chinese, they have callously decided that within one year of that purchase, those jobs can be more cheaply performed in Slovakia. That is exploitation.

Enjoy your new jobs, but remember that they come with the stain of other people's hopes and futures, which have been sacrificed to provide them.
