The Bratislava Transport Company (DPB) has begun a long-planned reconstruction of the tram tunnel under Bratislava Castle.
The route of trams numbers 1, 5 and 9 have been changed as a result, and the city centre will now be connected with the western districts of Dúbravka and Karlova Ves via the Danube embankment, the TASR newswire wrote.
According to the head of the DPB board, Branislav Zahradník, the work will last for about a year. During this time the tracks will be renewed, and new lighting, camera-surveillance and signalling systems will be installed; an emergency exit passage, long unused, will also be re-opened. The work will cost about €8.3 million.
The last big reconstruction of the tunnel, which was originally built during WWII, took place in the 1980s.
