The current heat wave, which began the same time as last year’s June heat wave, has brought extreme temperatures even to higher elevations. Temperatures at Štrbksé Pleso in the High Tatras reached 27.3°C on Tuesday, June 19, and 18.2°C at Chopok (in the Low Tatras), while at the meteorological station at Lomincký Štít (in the High Tatras - the highest meteorological station in the country), the temperature rose to 16.8°C.
“The first records of maximum daily temperatures were measured in the networks of the Slovak Hydro-meteorological Institute (SHMÚ) on Sunday, June 16,” climatologist Pavel Faško of the SHMÚ told the TASR newswire. “This happened in the municipality of Bolkovce near Lučenec (31.1°C), thus beating the record from June 16, 1964 and 1968 (31°C).”
On Monday, record temperatures were reached or broken at nine meteorological stations, mostly beating records from 1968 and 2012. On Tuesday, such records were registered at 25 Slovak meteorological stations, which is about half of all stations that send reports on temperatures daily. “The most important was the report from Poprad, where 32.4°C was recorded, meaning 3°C more than the previous record from the year 1968,” Faško said. “In the hottest places in Slovakia, more than 34°C was recorded – and Sliač and Podhájska had 34.2°C,” he added. Temperatures in Slovakia have remained high during the night time as well, averaging at over 20°C.
