CLOSE to 100 employees of the High Tatras National Park’s (TANAP) state forestry company ŠL (Štátne lesy) TANAP set off for nearly 60 locations within 10 protected areas in mid-October to count the local population of chamois.
The autumn counting of these mountain animals, unique to the Alpine and sub-Alpine habitat, has brought a record 1,389 chamois in their natural habitat, “which is 203 more than last year”, Lenka Burdová of the ŠL TANAP told the TASR newswire.
On the Slovak side of the Tatras, 1,018 chamois were counted, while 371 living chamois were found on the Polish side on this mountain range.
These numbers are the highest in 57 years of moni-toring the chamois in the Tatras, zoologist of the ŠL TANAP Jozef Hybler told the SITA newswire, adding that the lowest number was recorded in the late 1990s, when their number decreased to under 200.
Hybler said that chamois have fared well in the last decade, and thus their number keeps growing steadily.
