THE THIRTEEN Slovak Paralympians ended the 10th Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada with the largest medal haul for the independent Slovak state since the beginning of the event.
The athletes reaped a total of eleven medals including six gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. Slovakia previously counted thirteen medals in 2000 and twelve in 2004, including three golds in Sydney and five in Athens, the TASR newswire wrote.
Henrieta Farkašová (with guide Natália Šubrtová) and Jakub Krako (with guide Juraj Medera), both visually impaired, lead the way with three gold medals and one silver one each. This feat improved upon the previous record holder, Ján Riapoš’s count of two gold medals and one silver from the total of his athletic career.
Miroslav Haraus, also visually impaired (with guide Martin Makovník) took home two bronze medals, while Petra Smaržová won bronze in the giant slalom for standing athletes.
