SLOVAKIA'S registered unemployment rate was 10.6 percent in May 2006, according to Labour Bureau data, the lowest jobless rate since 1993.
At the end of May, labour offices registered 302,000 job seekers, while in May 2005 the figure stood at 325,000.
The Slovak Statistics Bureau (ŠÚ), however, offers different data. At the end of March 2006, the jobless rate was 14.9 percent, according to the ŠÚ.
The discrepancy between the two figures stems from the different methodologies they use to determine the jobless rate.
The Labour Bureau reports unemployment on the basis of the number of unemployed people registered at its offices, meaning that people who are not registered, having dropped out of the job market, are not included.
The ŠÚ, on the other hand, determines the jobless rate through polling, which is considered to be more accurate.
