Religion teachers' handbook under fire

A HANDBOOK for teachers of religion is sexist, according to psychologists and sociology experts, the daily Národná obroda wrote on February 6.

The Slovak Bishops Conference published the handbook in 1999 to instruct teachers in educating second-grade students of religion.

The daily wrote that it presents considerably outdated and patriarchal views on the role of men and women in society and the family.

A chapter explaining the essence of soap operas openly derides the female intellect, suggesting that the programmes "are clearly intended for the females in the household, because men can quickly recognize the actual quality [of the shows]."

The Education Ministry has not yet taken any stand on the handbook.
