POLICE on Saturday night detained the two remaining suspects from the trio of suspected killers of businessman Ján Kubašiak, who was brutally murdered last week in the central Slovak village of Polomka. The two men, Robert Petluš and Juraj Roszík, were arrested in the town of Prievidza.
Slovak Police President Ján Packa said that the two culprits offered no resistance and were not armed at the time of the arrest. The suspects were taken to Bratislava where a judge will now decide on their place of custody.
For the premeditated, mafia-like murder and the attempt to kill a policeman the offenders could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Kubašiak, who was murdered on the evening of November 14 in his family house, was allegedly involved in an extensive motor fuel export fraud disclosed in 2004. His name has also been linked with convicted gangland boss Mikuláš Černák.
Kubašiak was shot dead by the three suspects – one active and two former policemen.
Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák has already announced that he would fire the regional police head in Trenčín, Miroslav Hepner, in connection with the recent events. Kaliňák also wants to assert stricter rules for hiring policemen, including psychological checks. Policemen will also have to undergo regular
lie-detector tests that would reveal their potential links to organized crime.
