SLOVAKIA’S Prime Minister Robert Fico might run for the chair of the president of the European Commission. The Party of European Socialists (PES) is reportedly considering his nomination to replace current EC president José Manuel Barroso, whose term in office ends in 2014, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on October 18.
Fico allegedly spoke about his candidacy with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during his official trip to Berlin this summer.
Fico later denied the information, saying he does not intend to leave Slovakia.
The Slovak media has also speculated that Fico might run as a candidate in the presidential elections that will take place in 2014.
