Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico might run for the job of president of the European Commission. The Party of European Socialists (PES) is reportedly considering nominating him as a replacement for José Manuel Barroso, the current EC president, whose term ends in 2014, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on October 18.
Fico reportedly spoke about his candidacy with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during an official trip to Berlin this summer.
“The prime minister has only one interest: to stay in Slovakia,” the Government Office told Hospodárske Noviny. The Slovak media has also speculated that Fico might run as a candidate for president of Slovakia in elections that will take place in 2014.
