Prosecutor General Maroš Žilinka has said a probe into Slovakia's child re-education facilities has revealed a litany of "extraordinarily grave and extensive" rights abuses.
A report of the findings showed the re-education facilities do not fulfil their purpose, nor were they safe places for children where their rights would be respected.
It said laws had been broken and children's rights violated at all of the 13 such centres in Slovakia, which house approximately 390 children.
It said children in re-education centres were at risk of falling victim to sexual violence or other illegal acts, potentially repeatedly.
In addition, there were serious problems with hygiene, space and conditions at the facilities, which ultimately did not meet even the barest minimum standards required by law.
The Prosecutor General's office said systemic change in the activities of re-education facilities were necessary.
KDH (Christian Democratic Movement) MPs intend to initiate an inquiry into the matter, to see for themselves the conditions children currently live in.
