In the wake of a new amendment to the Penal Code, several retailers are already reporting a rise in thefts.
The amendment has raised the threshold for theft to be classified as a criminal offence from €266 to €700. Theft below this threshold is now considered a misdemeanor, punishable only by a fine of up to €331. As a result, thieves who steal goods approaching this limit can still turn a significant profit even if they receive the maximum penalty, notes the Sme daily.
For example, Billa and Tesco have reported increases in thefts.
