US SECRETARY of State Condoleezza Rice thanked Slovakia's Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan in a letter on September 27 for the aid Slovakia provided following hurricane Katrina, the TASR news agency reported.

"We highly appreciate your assistance and we're thankful for your support," reads the letter. Slovakia provided beds, blankets, disinfectants and sleeping bags that were sent to New Orleans following the hurricane, which killed more than 1,000 people.

Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Juraj Tomaga said that Rice's letter described Katrina as one of the most devastating hurricanes ever in the United States. "It's heartwarming that there are still countries that offer us a helping hand in these tragic times," Rice wrote.
