The financial support for projects in Roma communities includes a total of €620,000 in 2014, Government Proxy for Roma Communities Peter Pollák said February 27.

The finances can be used to reconstruct and officially document the blueprints of nursery schools, elementary schools and community centres, purchase equipment and livestock, to create new jobs or construct municipality-owned flats and family houses.

For the first time, the Office of Government Proxy will also allocate money to buy plots on which the Roma houses already stand. The money can also be used to measure the true current situation of plots on which the Roma communities stand. “We will support the geodetic measurements of the plots, but not their buy-out. Roma – just like all other plot owners – will not get the land on which their dwellings stand for free, but will rather have to buy them,” Pollák said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.

He also said that the resources for Roma projects should be used effectively, and thus he proposes to support activities with long-term effect, sustainable in the long term, and specifically targeted. “We want to solve the key problems in Roma communities, with high demand – pre-school education, housing and creating new jobs,” Pollák said. Applications with proposals for subsidies can be filed until April 14.
