A group of 160 Roma from eastern Slovakia in early February demanded asylum in Norway, said the Norwegian ambassador to Austria with responsibility for Slovakia, adding that unsuccessful applicants would be returned to Slovakia within two weeks.
Slovak Roma have made similar attempts to gain asylum in many European Union member states, drawing tightened visa policies from some and a call from the EU for Slovakia to improve the living conditions of the Roma at home.
