THE SITUATION of the Slovak Roma is deteriorating and in some cases it is "taking on the dimension of a humanitarian catastrophe", says a report produced by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
According to the SME daily, the IOM has registered cases in which some Roma children were forced to eat grass because they were so hungry. Another reports a case of a husband who sold his wife to prostitution to pay his debt to a usurer.
The report also states that the health of the Slovak Roma is deteriorating and that many Roma children were undernourished.
The cabinet plenipotentiary for Roma communities, Klára Orgovánová, said that the conclusions of the report are in line with letters she receives from the Roma community. Orgovánová said that the Roma constantly write to complain of "lacking money for everything".
