THE SUMMIT meeting between Presidents George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin on February 24 in Bratislava is one of the most important events in the coming weeks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the TASR news agency January 20.
Lavrov stressed that Russia and the US "simply must play an important role due to their potential and their interests on the international scene".
Lavrov said the two leaders would discuss international issues such as the fight against terrorism and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the fight against organized crime and drugs trafficking.
Both presidents also want to talk about regional conflicts in different parts of the world, including the Middle East, TASR reports.
In addition the two leaders will address the issue of how to prevent another catastrophic natural disasters such as the December earthquake and tsunami in Asia.
Lavrov added that Bush and Putin would discuss the fulfilment of previous agreements and economic cooperation between Moscow and Washington.
