THE FORMER head of the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS), Vladimír Mitro, said that the SIS had information on Russian intelligence services trying to prevent Slovakia from entering NATO, the daily Národná Obroda wrote.
Mitro was responding to an article published by the British journal Eye Spy, claiming that Russian intelligence was behind covert campaigns to discredit the SIS.
According to Mitro, the SIS had monitored increased activities on the part of Russian agents who tried to alter the course of Slovak politics.
Over the past year, Slovak and international media associated several scandals with the SIS. The British journal Jane's Intelligence Digest ran several articles suggesting that the SIS employed people who worked for the secret police under communism .
Russia has made no official comments on the Eye Spy article, however.
Juraj Tomaga, spokesman of Slovakia's Foreign Affairs Ministry, said that the ministry did not intend to comment on the issue.
