The recently sacked head of Slovakia’s tax authority, the Financial Administration (FS), Igor Krnáč, wanted to address the software problems now being encountered by his office by switching back to an old system installed by the company Novitech Tax, the Sme daily reported on 22 February.
Krnáč reportedly notified Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš and warned him that the emerging problems might threaten the state tax system. In a letter (published by Novitech Tax) dated February 18, he told Mikloš that until the new system was working flawlessly, tax offices should use the old system by Košice-based Novitech Tax. Two days after the letter was sent, i.e. on February 20, the minister fired Krnáč. The new software, KONS, was prepared by several companies of which one, Bank Pro Soft, is alleged to be linked to senior Finance Ministry official Miroslav Mikulčík. Mikulčík denies having any business links to Bank Pro Soft.
