THE SLOVAK cycling champion Peter Sagan has won the green jersey in the 101st edition of the famous Tour de France cycling race.

Sagan is the second man in history of the Tour who has won the subsidiary competition in points classification three times in a row, after German Erik Zabela who got the green jersey at six consecutive tours (1996-2001), the Sme daily wrote. Another cyclist, Irishman Sean Kelly, has won the green jersey four times, but not in a row.

Sagan, who competes for the Cannondale team, has thus fulfilled his main aim, which was the green jersey. He has however failed to win any one leg of the Tour, another aim he had set out for himself before the tour, Sme wrote.

In the overall classification Sagan finished 61st. The winner of the Tour and the holder of the yellow jersey is Italian Vincenzo Nibali of the Astana team.

Peter Velits, another Slovak cyclist who took part in the Tour, finished 27th.
