THE SLOVAK unit of South Korean electronics giant Samsung on Tuesday broke ground for a new logistics centre at its plant in Galanta (Trnava region). The new centre will supply Central and Eastern Europe.
The centre is expected to turn Samsung Electronics Slovakia into the country's largest exporter, with an annual turnover rising from Sk50 billion (€1.29 billion) to Sk90 billion (€2.3 billion), the TASR news wire wrote.
"Samsung provides evidence of the fact that an investor in Slovakia can succeed without receiving investment stimuli," said Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš.
Samsung corporate president Jong Chan Lee said that his firm currently employs 2,000 people full-time, 1,500 part-time, with another 2,500 people working at supply contractors. The company aims to create 200 more jobs next year. The construction of the plant in Galanta has brought down unemployment in the area from 16.2 percent in 2002 to 6.4 percent in 2005.
Galanta mayor Alexander Mezes predicts that Samsung will increase its output sharply in two to three years.
