JAROMÍR Pastorek likely will not be chairman of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) for much longer, as members of the SAV extraordinary congress passed the proposal for his dismissal, on December 18. Pastorek was criticised over the academy’s 2015 budget as well as the failure to represent interests of scientists and poor communication, the TASR newswire reported.
“I, for one, believe that I explained away and refuted the proclaimed reasons [for dismissal],” said Pastorek as quoted by TASR, adding that he respects the decision of the congress.
A total of 62.5 percent of delegates voted in favour of Pastorek’s ouster, although the chairman can be dismissed only by President Andrej Kiska, to whom the proposal will be delivered. The SAV congress is made up of representatives of each academy institute.
After the vote, SAV congress chair Ján Sedlák chose to resign from his post and was replaced by Karol Marhold of the SAV Botanical Institute.
