The foundation stone of the plant was laid by Schindler vice-director Patrick Ruiz Martin and Kostolné Kračany mayor Ladislav Gódány on Monday, but construction has been under way for some time and is set to be completed at the end of June 2013. "After two years, we're planning to extend [the site], which could provide jobs for another 150 people," said Gódány, adding that the local industrial park already hosts a company called Wertheim (an Austrian producer of safes, with 100 employees). In total, the two companies employ more than 1,000 people in the vicinity of Žitný Ostrov (in south-western Slovakia).

"Schindler has been doing business in Slovakia since 1993," said Gódány, praising the investment for its positive effects on employment. "Agriculture hasn't been able to sustain us recently, so we're looking for alternatives that will [provide work for] our people," said the mayor, adding that the land on which the plant is being built is not arable farmland.
