Schools can’t cover salary rises

Universities have claimed that they lack Sk11.9 billion ($250 million) to pay salary increases to educators that were promised by outgoing Education Minister Milan Ftáčnik, but not provided for in universities’ budgets. The salary increases, which were supposed to come to Sk7,000 on average per person per month, would have almost doubled some university teaching salaries, and had been ordained in a State Service Law that took effect April 1.
