THE CANDIDACY of President Rudolf Schuster may be in question after several lawyers suggested that a petition for Schuster's re-election bid does not meet the required legal criteria.
The Slovak daily SME wrote on January 20 that the petition that people are signing in support of Schuster's re-election does not have the president's declaration that he wants to run.
Lawyer Tomáš Kamenec said to SME that "based on such a petition it is not possible to run for president," even if the petition committee manages to collect the required 15,000 signatures.
After the petition was launched, Schuster denied information confirming that he wanted to run for president, instead insisting that he would decide once the signatures were collected.
Tibor Laznička, a member of the petition committee, told SME that their legal advisers said that the president's agreement with the candidacy was not necessary.
