More party members are expected to leave the opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), according to the information available to the TASR newswire. Part of the Bratislava members, as well as some of those outside the capital, allegedly consider leaving
“Several SDKÚ members have a breakaway plan,” a source from inside the party told TASR, adding that party chairman Pavol Frešo summoned a party presidium for November 20. Most regional chairpersons asked for it more than a month ago. The agenda of the presidium is not known so far. Several regional chairs met already on November 18, and they play to attend the presidium despite not knowing what is to be discussed there.
The presidium, called for by six regional chairpersons, should focus on the situation in SDKÚ. The party has no vice-chairs, as Martin Fedor, Viliam Novotný and Ivan Štefanec resigned after party congress failed to recall Frešo (160 of the delegates present were for recalling him, while 48 wanted him to stay, TASR wrote).
The party has no financial budgetary committee, nor a general secretary. The caucus exists only thanks to Mikuláš Dzurinda and Ivan Mikloš who left the party, remaining caucus members. If they left, the caucus would cease to exist, according to the parliamentary rules of order.
Recently, also the SDKÚ youth organisation, New generation, left the party because of dissatisfaction with Pavol Frešo. Some members form the regions left, too, with several SDKÚ members allegedly joining the new Sieť party of Radoslav Procházka.
