According to the SDKÚ's general secretary Ivan Harman, the party inspected 11 questionable donors who gave the party around Sk1 million (€24,800), the Slovak daily Pravda reported.

"We found that six [of the 11 donors] were questionable. Together they donated Sk355,000 (€8,800) to the SDKÚ," said Harman.

The party would not reveal the names of these donors nor submit documents confirming the findings.

The SDKÚ said that it would strengthen its rules governing donations in order to prevent such cases.

Police are also investigating the case but have not produced any concrete findings so far.

According to Zuzana Wienk of the AFP, the SDKÚ dealt with the allegations in a "very insufficient" way.
