The presidium of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) will not censure the initiators of the ‘We Create Slovakia’ project, MPs Lucia Žitňanská and Miroslav Beblavý. Chair of the party Pavol Frešo said after a six-hour discussion that Žitňanská, who currently leads the SDKÚ caucus, has his trust. Moreover, he stressed that the SDKÚ is a stable party which can resolve its problems in a friendly atmosphere, the SITA newswire reported on March 22.
“We want the SDKÚ to be a strong party, to be the spine of the centre-right alternative,” Frešo said, as quoted by SITA.
Frešo added that if the aim of the ‘We Create Slovakia’ is to support the existence of a strong centre-right alternative to the ruling Smer party, they have to discuss the possible barriers, which is what they did.
Žitňanská said that there is a common goal toward creating an alternative to the rule of one party, and that the members of the SDKÚ want their party to be the stronger part of this alternative. Through the ‘We Create Slovakia’ project they are seeking to find ways of approaching people who do not trust them.
“It was a long debate, but I am happy that the colleagues understood my point,” Žitňanská told SITA, adding that the project will continue.
‘We Create Slovakia’ started on February 20, with the aim of searching for new ways, outside the various political parties, to resolve the current political situation in the country. Žitňanská and Beblavý said when presenting the project that they will invite personalities for whom “partisan soil is not attractive”. Žitňanská told the Sme daily in mid February that the whole event will be prepared without the SDKÚ, stressing that “it is a political, but not a partisan project of the future image of Slovakia”.
Yet, after meeting with the SDKÚ presidium she admitted that if any professional issue arise she will invite the members of the party to deal with it, SITA reported.
