WITH almost a dozen candidates now officially running in the spring 2014 presidential race, the biggest question remains whom the ruling Smer party will put in the game. But it is also not clear whom the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), one of the major opposition parties, will support.
The idea of selecting a candidate in primary elections has been abandoned now, some voices from the party leadership have said, as reported by the TASR newswire.
The party is expected to discuss the matter at its presidium on December 12, but SDKÚ leaders have made it clear in their statements that the party is unlikely to have its own candidate. The party might wait until the number of official candidates is finalised, and then select one to support that is “closest to our values”, deputy chair Ivan Štefanec said, as reported by TASR.
