THE CHRISTIAN Democratic Movement-KDH’s presidential candidate Pavol Hrušovský has won the support of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union-SDKÚ, Chairman Pavol Frešo announced December 18.
“When deciding to support a candidate in the first round of the presidential election, SDKÚ presidium gave priority to our long-term policy to unite standard centre-right forces as a counterweight to the dominance of the one socialist party,” Frešo said as quoted by the TASR newswire. “Accordingly, SDKÚ didn't endorse its own presidential candidate and is recommending to voters to support Pavol Hrušovský.”
Prime Minister Robert Fico announced earlier in the day he would run for president as a candidate of his party, Smer. Other presidential candidates include businessman Andrej Kiska (independent); Ján Čarnogurský, a former chair of the KDH(also independent); Peter Osuský from Freedom and Solidarity (SaS); Radoslav Procházka, formerly a member of the KDH (independent); Milan Kňažko, one of the leaders of the Velvet Revolution and a former government official (independent) and Leonid Chovanec, Jozef Behýl, Milan Melník, Ľubica Blašková and Jozef Šimko.
This week, also Gyula Bárdos was proposed by the Party of Hungarian Community (SMK) as presidential candidate.
