The largest opposition party in the Slovak Parliament, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) said on April 27 that if Robert Fico's Government did not halt the first package of private-public partnership (PPP) projects for motorway construction by Friday (April 30), it would file a criminal complaint.
"We're ready to file a legal complaint against Mr. Fico, [Finance Minister Ján] Počiatek and [Transport Minister Ľubomír] Vážny over suspicions of misuse of a public officer's authority," said SDKÚ vice-chair Ivan Mikloš at a press conference.
The financial documentation concerning the first PPP package, includes the construction of certain sections of the east-west D1 motorway, should be completed by Friday. According to the SDKÚ, the whole project is overpriced by €1.3 billion and construction is 14 months behind schedule. "PPP [projects] are the biggest public commission in the history of Slovakia," noted SDKÚ MP Igor Štefanec. Mikloš compared Slovakia to Greece, which is currently grappling with huge public debt, but he stressed that while the Greeks have experienced above-average living standards until now, only a select group close to the governing Smer party have had such luck in Slovakia.
