SLOVAKIA's Institute of National Memory (ÚPN) has started to publish files maintained by the ŠtB, the communist-era secret service, on the Internet November 16, the TASR news wire reported.

The first of 20 books of data comes from the former ŠtB office in eastern Slovakia and covers the period from the mid-1950s to 1989.

"These files are important for people who want to know whether the ŠtB spied on them and had a file on them," the ÚPN's spokesman Michal Dzurjanin said.

The ÚPN will begin publishing files from the ŠtB office in Banská Bystrica, central Slovakia in January or February, while files from western Slovakia should be made available in 2005.
