SLOVAKIA’S cabinet has approved the nomination of Maroš Šefčovič to continue as the country’s representative to the future European Commission for the period 2009-2014, the SITA newswire reported.
Šefčovič, who formerly worked as the Slovak Ambassador to the EU, became a member of the European Commission in October when Ján Figeľ, the first Slovak EC representative, left his post to become chairman of Slovakia’s Christian Democratic Movements (KDH) political party.
The Slovak portfolio within the commission currently covers education, training, culture and youth.
“The president of the European Commission will decide about the future portfolios of the candidates for commissioners after consultations with the prime ministers and heads of the member states,” said Prime Minister Robert Fico, as quoted by SITA.
Slovakia is lobbying for its representative to be given the energy portfolio in the next European Commission.
