Officials from several embassies in Slovakia, including Israel’s, local authority officials and dozens of other people gathered at the Holocaust Museum in Sereď (Trnava Region) to pay tribute to victims of the Holocaust on March 22.
A moment of silence was also dedicated to those who were killed in the Brussels terror attacks earlier in the day, the TASR newswire reported.
The commemorative event in Sereď was marking the first transport of Jews from Slovakia to Auschwitz, which took place in Poprad (Prešov Region) on March 25, 1942. A total of 57 transports with almost 58,000 Jews were then organised within a few months.
“We’ve gathered here to pay tribute to those who didn’t return, with a hope that the painful history of these people will prevent anything similar from reappearing in the future,” said Sered Mayor Martin Tomčányi, as quoted by TASR.
He stressed that it seems to be a relevant issue also nowadays.
“Polarisation of opinions plays into the hands of those who promote definite solutions,” Tomčányi continued, “as if historical experience wasn’t enough of a warning.”
