Ševc re-elected as Communist Party chairman

JOZEF Ševc was re-elected chairman of Slovakia's Communist Party, a member of the opposition, at the party’s fifth national congress in Bratislava. Ševc won the votes of 157 out of the 200 delegates present; 30 voted against him and 13 abstained, the news agency TASR wrote.

In his opening address to congress delegates, Ševc said that the Communists would further insist on the removal of Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda's government which, "through a servile majority and often some corrupt MPs, enforces genocide-like measures".

Among the guests at the congress are representatives from the Movement for Democratic Slovakia and Smer opposition parties, the KOZ trade union confederation, and the Slovak Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters.
