A long-running defamation lawsuit between Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) deputy chairman Ivan Mikloš and Prime Minister Robert Fico, leader of the Smer party, was adjourned once more at the Bratislava I District Court on Wednesday, June 16, the SITA newswire wrote.
The defendant, Robert Fico, was absent from the hearing, for which his lawyer Zuzana Kupcová apologised on his behalf. However, she demanded that the court call more witnesses, among them former finance minister Brigita Schmögnerová, Slovakia's ambassador to Hungary Peter Weiss, former politician Pavol Rusko and several former parliamentary deputies.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Ernest Valko, opposed Kupcová’s demand, saying that calling the witnesses was completely pointless and stating that the defence has yet to present any relevant evidence to explain why Fico’s original statement – the subject of the lawsuit – was justified.
