Shareholders of the Slovak power utility Slovenské Elektrárne (SE), the state and the Italian energy company Enel, have finally agreed to provide additional funding necessary for completion of the third and fourth units of the Nuclear Power Plant Mochovce (EMO).
At a general meeting on April 8, shareholders approved an additional €400 million for the completion, spokeswoman for SE Janka Burdová told
the SITA newswire. They had previously approved an increase in funding of nearly €600 million. The construction of two nuclear units will thus eventually cost €3.8 billion instead of the originally planned €2.8 billion.
Slovenské Elektrárne, which is building the two nuclear units, justifies the need for the increased investment mainly by the requirement to implement further security measures. “Shareholders of SE have confirmed that the third and fourth units are the first VVER blocks in the project of which all post-Fukushima improvements have been incorporated, as approved by the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority in the final report on stress tests in the Slovak Republic,” said Burdová.
The third unit of the nuclear power plant should be completed at the end of this year, and the fourth in 2015. Originally, however, the deadlines were the end of 2012 and autumn 2013. Installed capacity of the new nuclear units is about 1,000 megawatts.
