WHILE an Apple iPod with a 20 gigabyte capacity costs Sk15,170 (€380) in Düsseldorf , customers in Madrid would pay Sk12,000 (€300) for the same model. Slovak retailers sell iPods for Sk11,390 (€285), which approach the prices of the Spanish retailers.
Ľubomír Drahovský, analyst at the Terno research agency, told the Hospodárske Noviny business daily that the price differences are directly related to the amount of VAT levied on such items in the different countries as well as the number of items sold and the purchasing power of citizens.
Geography also plays a part in determining price. For example, Bratislava and Vienna are so close that both cities adjust their prices to very similar or even the same levels.
