Germany’s biggest employer, Siemens, which also employs thousands of people in Slovakia, is planning to dismiss thousands of its employees, according to the German daily Börsen Zeitung. The main reason behind the plan is a fall in orders, which have dropped by about two-fifths, the Sme daily reported on August 22.
While the reports suggest that as many as 10,000 people might lose their jobs, Siemens has yet to confirm its plans.
“Our executive director Peter Löscher only announced the launch of a project to improve the positions in expenditures, productivity and processes,” said a spokesperson for Siemens, Oliver Santen, as quoted by the Hospodárske Noviny daily.
Siemens currently employs 410,000 people worldwide; in Slovakia approximately 4,000 people are on its payroll.
Slovak representatives of the firm also refused to comment on the reports.
